Resetting a Nest thermostat can be a little nerve-wracking because there are so many different options.

After all, you don’t want to find yourself stuck without a working thermostat while your home or office gradually gets colder and colder (or warmer and warmer, depending on where you live!).

But if you’re experiencing issues like the Nest turning off and on by itself, not communicating with your Nest mini and other devices, or just not working properly, a reset is often your best option.

The good news is that Nest has taken this into account and made the reset process fairly straightforward.

Here’s how to reset your Nest thermostat:

  1. Gently press the thermostat to open the menu.
  2. Slide a finger along the ring to to turn it to Settings.
  3. Press the thermostat to select Settings.
  4. Turn to Reset and press the thermostat to select it.
  5. Choose Restart to complete a soft reset or choose All Settings for a factory reset.

If you want to know more about how to reset your Nest thermostat, I’ll cover the difference between a soft reset and factory reset, as well as how to disable the Nest’s learning mode.

Soft Reset Google Nest Thermostat

A soft reset will restart your Nest thermostat without deleting any settings or preferences.

This is great for troubleshooting connection issues or if you recently changed your WiFi settings.

You can also use this method to reset your Nest thermostat after a power outage.

To perform a soft reset of your Nest thermostat:

  1. Gently press the thermostat to open the menu.
  2. Slide a finger along the ring to to turn it to Settings.

That’s all there is to it! Your thermostat should restart itself, which may take up to a couple of minutes depending on your model and internet connection.

If you are still experiencing issues even after a restart, then you may need to try to a factory reset.

Factory Reset Google Nest Thermostat

A factory reset will return your thermostat back to the state it was in when it first shipped from the factory.

That means that all of your personal settings will be deleted and will need to be set up again.

To factory reset your Nest thermostat:

  1. Open the nest app, tap on Menu and select Settings.
  2. Select the thermostat you want to reset by tapping on it.

  5. Slide a finger along the ring to to turn it to Settings.

This is a good option if you are preparing your thermostat to give to someone else or to sell.

How To Reset Auto Schedule on Nest Thermostat

If you find your thermostat turning on and off at inconvenient times throughout the day, it may be because the auto-schedule isn’t working properly.

The thermostat’s auto-schedule is supposed to sense what temperature you prefer throughout the day.

It can get thrown off if your habits have changed recently, if there’s been a power outage, or even just depending on the season.

The good news is that a quick reset of the auto-schedule usually fixes things!

To reset your Nest thermostat’s auto schedule:

  1. Turn the ring to highlight the Settings option and tap on the Nest to select it.
  2. Turn clockwise until you see the Reset screen, and tap it to select.
  3. In the next screen, turn the ring to highlight Auto-Schedule and select it.
  4. Select Reset.
  5. Turn the ring clockwise to confirm that you want to reset the auto-schedule.
  6. Wait 1-2 minutes for that to reset.

This reset will remove any temperature shedules that you created. If you have a set schedule you want to keep, you will need to set it up again.

Otherwise, you can let the Nest learn your new schedule as you go about your day and make the changes that feel best to you.
